Due to the warm fall, the tuna fish took there time leaving the Northeast. With a decent bite happening of Virginia beach and North Carolina in mid January, the fishery has closed until June 1st. The tunas are safe until then! I am currently fishing down in south Florida, and when we have north wind down here we have been seeing Blue fins already swimming into the gulf for there warm winter spawn. They do not eat when they come through here, as they are in travel mode only. It has been nice to see smaller tunas over the last couple years "(200 lb class) which is there first spawn, and a indication that the younger fish are joining there elders. For years, we have seen only big fish come through.
As we prepare for our 2012 season, there are some uncertainties as we wait. It has been a warm winter so far with very little ice, if we can escape with a bit warmer winter, we can expect an early arrival of Stripers in the spring. So keep your fingers crossed! The end of May, through June is always very plentiful with Stripers, so were counting the days! In the meantime, i reside in south Florida, catching Sailfish, Mahi, Tuna and whatever else might cross my path! Its an easy way to wait for spring and be ready to drop the boat back in the water and start a new chapter for 2012.
Talk with ya soon!
